Nine sustainability parameters

A Givaudan unique approach to highlight the sustainability aspects of our fragrance molecules. Developed by the collaboration of our internal experts from throughout the operational chain, we pride ourselves to be able to share a detailed explanation of sustainability for our molecules.
 

Renewable carbon
From natural sources that can be replenished in a short time frame, e.g. plants, bio-mass, or from recycling.
Biodegradability
Key removal process of organic chemicals in the environment: breakdown of organic matter by micro-organisms, such as bacteria and fungi.
Ecotoxicity
Intrinsic toxicity of the ingredient to aquatic species.
Waste
Amount of waste generated while manufacturing the ingredient.
Chemistry
Determines if the process uses chemistry that is environmentally disfavoured.
Solvents used
Environmental impact of the solvents used in the process.
Process complexity
Number of steps in the chemical process.
Olfactive impact
Odour value as measured by Givaudan as a combination of Odour Detection Threshold and Vapour Pressure.
Social responsibility
Referring to the SMETA or equivalent protocol for our manufacturing sites.
