CITRUS | Fresh, Zesty, Lavender-like
Bergamot fruit on tree
Perfumery uses

With its extremely rich, sweet and fruity top note, followed by floral and balsamic undertones, this oil brings a beautifully bright and sparkling citrus facet to fragrances.

Bergamot is the mainstay of the first modern perfume accord: cologne. From the beginning of the 18th century to the present day, bergamot has been used in all types of perfume to bring freshness and naturalness to the fragrance. It is particularly used in floral top notes to accompany tea and citrus accords, and in the heart of woody or ambery compositions to add a fresh and floral freshness.

When in bloom, the bergamot tree is covered with a multitude of fragrant white flowers. The bergamot is a small fruit that turns from green to yellow as it ripens, with a sour, bitter pulp. Its essential oil is contained in the oily sacs of the pericarp. The unique terroir of Calabria, at the foot of steep, high mountains that shelter the region from the cold northern winds, allows warm African air, fertile alluvial soils and a perfect balance between sun and rain to create an exceptional microclimate for the development of the bergamot aroma.

Harvesting begins with the arrival of cold days at the end of November and usually ends around the end of February. The bergamots are then stored for two to three days to warm them up and soften their skin.

To extract the essential oil, the bergamots are scratched under running water to extract the essence. The oil is then carried by water, forming an emulsion. The essential oil is separated from the water and residue by centrifugation and decanting.
